Reading the external sector

Exchange rate and reserves

PKR/USD is what one dollar costs in rupees. Reserves are the foreign currency the State Bank and banks hold to pay for imports and debt.

Trade and remittances

Exports bring dollars in and imports send them out. Remittances are money sent home by Pakistanis working abroad, a large source of dollars.

Current account

Trade, services, income and remittances added together. A deficit means more dollars leaving the country than coming in.

Questions about Pakistan's external sector

What is the current account?

The balance of all trade, services, income and transfers with the rest of the world. A deficit means Pakistan is spending more foreign currency than it earns.

Why do remittances matter for the stock market?

They bring in dollars, support the rupee and spending at home, and add to bank deposits.

What are SBP reserves?

The foreign currency held by the State Bank of Pakistan, used to pay for imports and repay foreign debt.
