Reading a dividend record

Who gets the dividend

Own the shares before the ex-date and the dividend is yours. Buy on the ex-date or later and it goes to the seller. The payment date is when the money reaches your account.

Book closure

For a few days the company freezes its list of shareholders. Everyone on the list gets the dividend. The record date is the day that list is taken.

Yield and payout ratio

Yield is the dividend against the share price: a Rs 10 dividend on a Rs 200 share is a 5% yield. Payout ratio is the share of profit paid out: Rs 5 paid from Rs 10 of earnings per share is 50%.

What is the ex-dividend date?

The cut-off for a dividend. Own the shares before the ex-date and you get it. Buy on the ex-date or after and you don't.

What is book closure?

A few days when the company freezes its list of shareholders to decide who gets the dividend. If you are on the list, you are paid.

How is dividend yield calculated?

The year's dividend per share divided by the share price. A Rs 10 dividend on a Rs 200 share is a 5% yield.
